Lead the Transformation of a Critical Enterprise Software Platform

ANGEHEUERT GmbH Personnel Consulting is recruiting an experienced Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for a well-established B2B software company operating within a private equity-backed technology holding group in Germany.
This position offers the opportunity to lead the modernisation of a long-standing enterprise software platform used within the energy sector. The systems are deeply integrated into customers’ operational environments and now require strategic technological transformation to improve scalability, architecture, product innovation, and engineering efficiency.
The role is based primarily around Dresden or Frankfurt am Main with regular on-site collaboration and occasional travel within Germany.

About the Opportunity

The successful candidate will join a fast-growing software holding company focused on scaling and modernising established software businesses. While employed at holding-company level, approximately 80–90% of your time will be dedicated to supporting one portfolio company currently undergoing technical and organisational transformation.
This is not a greenfield build. Instead, the focus is on evolving a mature platform, improving technical foundations, and creating a scalable engineering structure capable of supporting long-term growth.
You will also contribute to broader technology initiatives across the group, including AI adoption, software integration projects, and selected M&A activities.

Key Responsibilities

Technology Leadership & Product Strategy

  • Define and drive the long-term technical vision for the platform
  • Support strategic product direction alongside engineering leadership
  • Translate business goals into scalable and sustainable architecture decisions
  • Improve system resilience, maintainability, and operational efficiency

Platform Modernisation

  • Modernise complex legacy software environments
  • Introduce clearer architectural standards and technical governance
  • Enhance existing systems rather than replacing them entirely
  • Support cloud-native and AI-driven transformation initiatives

Engineering Organisation Development

  • Build stronger engineering structures, processes, and accountability
  • Lead and mentor Engineering Managers and senior technical teams
  • Improve software delivery quality, development speed, and collaboration
  • Strengthen alignment between Product and Engineering functions

AI & Innovation

  • Evaluate and integrate AI technologies into engineering workflows
  • Support intelligent automation and modern DevOps practices
  • Collaborate on innovation initiatives across portfolio companies

Strategic Group Collaboration

  • Contribute to technology-related M&A activities and integrations
  • Work closely with holding-company leadership on strategic initiatives
  • Participate in operational transformation projects across the group

Candidate Profile

The organisation is seeking a strategic technology leader with strong transformation experience and a practical, hands-on mindset.

Essential Experience

  • More than 10 years of experience in software engineering leadership
  • Previous experience as a CTO or equivalent executive technology role
  • Proven background modernising existing enterprise software products
  • Strong understanding of software architecture and organisational scaling
  • Experience managing engineering organisations of 15+ professionals
  • Ability to align technology strategy with business and product goals
  • Experience within medium-sized or private equity-backed companies
  • Strong communication skills in both German and English
  • Willingness to travel within Germany when required

Valuable Additional Experience

  • Exposure to regulated sectors such as energy, industry, or public services
  • Knowledge of mergers, acquisitions, and post-merger integration
  • Practical experience applying AI in engineering or DevOps environments
  • Familiarity with transformation or restructuring initiatives
